A proximal hamstring tear or avulsion can be a debilitating injury. Patients may experience a sharp pain and/or a popping sound in the back, upper part of the thigh. A swelling and hematoma may also develop in this region. An MRI scan is usually ordered to confirm the diagnosis. The proximal hamstring tear can be repaired arthroscopically. The procedure is minimally invasive with less damage to surrounding tissue and offers better visualization potentially reducing postoperative pain and the likelihood of complications.
