Avulsion Fracture

An avulsion fracture of the hip occurs when a small piece of bone that is attached to a tendon or ligament is pulled away from the bone. Treatment of an avulsion fracture involves rest, application of ice to the injured area, and performance of physical therapy exercises to improve strength, restore range of motion and promote bone healing. You may have to be on crutches for a few weeks to allow the avulsion fracture to heal. Surgical repair is rarely required.
