Subacromial impingement syndrome is a common shoulder disorder that involves the subacromial space of the shoulder. It may be caused due to rotator cuff disease, tendonitis, or bursitis. If left untreated, it can result in loss of function and disability. Symptoms include pain that is exacerbated by lifting objects or raising the arm overhead. The condition may be diagnosed by physical examination, x-rays, or MRI scans. Conservative treatment options include pain medications, physical therapy and subacromial injections. Surgical treatments include subacromial decompression and acromioplasty.
