A proximal biceps rupture is a tear in the biceps tendon at its attachment to the shoulder. It is usually caused due a degenerative process that occurs in older individuals with the fraying of the tendon that occurs over a period of time and culminates with complete tearing away of the tendon from the bone. There may be a popping sound or a snap accompanied with pain at the site of the proximal biceps rupture. The condition may be diagnosed by physical examination, x-rays, or MRI scans, and relieved with rest and pain medication. In severe cases, surgical repair of the biceps tendon may be recommended.
